    Sakadas and Beyond: Connecting Our Past to Inspire the Future

    June 29th to July 1st 2006 - Renaissance Ilikai Waikiki Hotel, Honolulu, Hawaii

    The Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS) holds its 11th National Conference in Hawai'i to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of Filipino immigration to Hawai'i. The theme, "Sakadas and Beyond: Connecting Our Past to Inspire the Future" honors Sakadas, the first Filipino pioneers recruited to work the sugar cane fields in Hawai'i, yet extends its focus to the past, present and future experiences of other Filipino in Hawai'i and the continental United States.

    Join Filipino American scholars, historians, authors, film makers, educators, archivists, community researchers, student activists, and just plain folks eager to share their research, resources, expertise and personal experiences.

    Meet authors and poets: Estrella Alamar, Thelma Bucholdt, Evangeline Buell et al, Fred Cordova, Joan May Cordova, George Estrada, Dorothy Fujita-Rony, Abe Ignacio, Herb Jamero, Emily Lawsin, Oscar Penaranda, Barbara Posadas, playwright Timoteo Cordova, film makers Stephanie Castillo and Noel Izon, and others.

    See historical materials and exhibits produced by 23 FANHS chapters.

    Learn various ways to document oral history and family genealogy; collect, preserve and use historical photographs, newspapers and other historic ephemera; develop and archives; do journal writing; plan a photo exhibit; write proposals.

    View selected films by Filipino American film makers or about the Filipino American experieince.

    Enjoy the tour of old sugar and pineapple plantations and other historic sites on Oahu.
